The Symposium Completed Successfully …

… and now the follow-up.

The final program, with biographies of presenters and organizers, can be downloaded as a PDF file (6 MB): Active Learning Approaches in Mathematics Instruction.

A poster presentation on the symposium will be presented at the next annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. It will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, 4-7 January 2017.

 

 

Outline of the Symposium Program

Thursday, January 28th, 2016

This NSF and Sloan Foundation sponsored Symposium will be held on August 2-3, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (across from the Hyatt Regency), immediately preceding the Mathematical Association of America MathFest meeting.

Despite growing evidence of the effectiveness of the use of active learning in mathematics instruction, this practice remains limited in the United States. Researchers, instructors, practitioners and educational administrators have called for efforts to address this issue. The symposium will investigate the use of active learning and assessment and evaluation in mathematics (and other STEM fields).

The symposium will consist of two half-day meetings.

1pm, August 2nd, two sessions chaired by David Bressoud:

  • Exploring the definitions of active learning in mathematics.
  • Exploring the obstacles to implementing and sustaining an active learning program.
    • Panelists:

      Tara Holm – Cornell University

      Charles Henderson – Western Michigan University

      Dennis Deturck – University of Pennsylvania

      Angie Hodge – University of Nebraska – Omaha

      Benjamin Braun – University of Kentucky

      Michael Starbird – University of Texas – Austin.

9am, August 3rd, two sessions chaired by Doris Zahner:

  • What is known about assessment and evaluation in active learning.
  • Key questions that need to be answered in order to proceed with expanding active learning methods and programs.
    • Panelists:

      Nancy Ritze – Bronx Community College

      Jerzy Mogilski – University of Texas at Brownsville

      Ted Mahavier – Lamar University

      Mikhail Bouniaev – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

      Suzanna Klaf – Columbia University

      Zach Kornhauser – Columbia University

The symposium will close with a summary of findings from the two days and will end by 1:30pm.

Ron Douglas, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and past Provost and Executive Vice President of Texas A&M University.
David Bressoud, Dewitt Professor of Mathematics at Macalester College, former President of the Mathematical Association of America and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
Doris Zahner, Director of Test Development and Measurement Science at Council for Aid to Education and adjunct Associate Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University.
